Living through lockdowns and the pandemic is stressful. When we’re stuck in our homes, unhelpful thoughts can set in. UK Men’s Sheds Association Trustee Chris Lee shares seven habits that have sustained his health and wellbeing in lockdown.

Being purposeful – looking back at the end of the day aim to have a few activities, however small, that you’re pleased to have got done.

Creating comforting routines – fix some points in your day/ week for doing things you don’t need to think too much about, like going for a walk on set days.

Enjoying new experiences – alongside the routine, do different/new things. This could include learning (skills and/or knowledge) through free online courses and tutorials.

Rewarding yourself – when you’ve done a task you’ve been putting off for a while, or that you were worried about, give yourself a treat – reading a book for an hour, watching a favourite DIY programme.

Creating something – if you’re pleased with what you’ve created that’s enough. It doesn’t have to be high art; it could be taking some photos, doing a bit of gardening, trying a new recipe.

Switching off – this is about limiting your access to news about the pandemic – it’s usually bad and often confusing. It’s also about getting away from screens of all kinds to have more real, personal experiences (preferably involving fresh air).

Taking control – Control what you can control and (try to) ignore the rest by setting your own routines, making your to-do lists achievable, and remembering – this is not forever.
