On October 11, 2024, The Dusty Shed in Ely, Cardiff, had the pleasure of welcoming two special guests: Plaid Cymru Leader Rhun ap Iorwerth and MP Liz Saville Roberts. Taking a break from Plaid Cymru’s Annual Conference, held in the city, the pair spent time engaging with the shedders, listening to their stories, and showing their support for the Men’s Shed movement.

Rhun ap Iorwerth was true to his commitment of “building trust in the run-up to the 2026 Senedd election,” as he spent the morning in conversation with the shedders. The discussions ranged from the importance of health and wellbeing to the incredible sense of community found within Men’s Sheds. Tony, one of the shedders, shared his own experiences with Men’s Sheds in Australia, highlighting how the movement has had a profound focus on men’s health in other parts of the world.

“A fresh start is needed on health,” Rhun said, acknowledging the transformative impact that Men’s Sheds have on their members. The social support, camaraderie, and activities provided in the sheds often make a huge difference in improving mental and physical health, especially for older men.

Liz Saville Roberts, MP for Dwyfor Meirionnydd also took the opportunity to discuss her hopes of establishing a Men’s Shed in Nefyn, an area close to her heart. She spoke passionately about how such a group could benefit the small town on the Llŷn Peninsula, helping to combat isolation and provide a sense of belonging, similar to what she saw in at The Dusty Shed in Ely.

During the visit, Liz had the chance to meet one of The Dusty Shed’s oldest members, 94-year-old Cliff. He spoke about how much the Shed means to him: “It’s a really good thing, too. Without this place, I’d be stuck indoors all day.” Cliff’s words captured the essence of why Men’s Sheds are so valuable—they give men a place to go, things to do, and people to talk to, helping to improve their quality of life.

It was a heartwarming visit, with Plaid Cymru’s leaders leaving The Dusty Shed with a clear understanding of the importance of Men’s Sheds in local communities. Their support is an encouraging sign that this movement will continue to grow, helping more men like Cliff live happier, healthier lives.
