In the last week there has been some excitement in England around the doors of Sheds being able to open. We have been waiting for further guidance and below are relevant ‘snippets’ from the UK’s Governments Frequently Asked Questions and Guidance for the safe use of multi-purpose community centres.
Sherwin Williams, parent company to Ronseal have offered to provide sanitiser for Men’s Sheds across the UK. Ronseal are a partner of UK Men’ s Sheds Association, this offer is open to all Men’s Sheds in the UK to support Sheds for when they re-open in the future. This is a special one-off offer to assist Men’s Sheds in opening post lockdown.
UKMSA take great interest in the government’s latest easing of lockdown. We are awaiting guidance from ACRE, and government agencies, with regards the news that community centres can open. We once again would advise Sheds to read the guidance under COvid-19 on the UKMSA website (https://menssheds.org.uk/covid-19/). Advice on our website will be updated as and when new information becomes available. Two metres is still the advised social distancing requirement, which we recommend Sheds adhere to. We will update Sheds both directly and through social media as and when we have further information and guidance. ACRE and other agencies are expected to put out guidance in the next two to three days. We appreciate lockdown is and has been challenging during this time and are eagerly anticipating the return to Shed life.
Across the country Shedders are asking, when can we re-open and what will we need to put in place?
In partnership with other Shed Associations and Sheds, we have developed a document that will hopefully help you with your thought process and what you may want to consider when opening your Shed.
We fully understand the dilemma for Sheds and Shedders and we hope you follow the guidance until such time that it is both legal and safe to open your Sheds. As we receive more information or ideas from Sheds and partners we will update this document here on the UKMSA website. Stay safe!
Unlocking the Shed should be a useful supplement to the guidance from Public Health agencies and Governments. Click the boxes below to download resource packs.
Under the new Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant (RHLG) businesses in England in receipt of the Expanded Retail Discount business rates relief (which covers retail, hospitality and leisure) with a rateable value of less than £51,000 will be eligible for the following cash grants per property. To be clear, eligible charities can benefit from both the rates relief and the grants if all the eligibility criteria are met. Detailed guidance from BEIS can be read here and a Technical FAQ for Local Authorities has also been published.
Men’s Sheds are spaces men can create, converse and connect. There is no limit to the creativity we see coming out of the Sheds, so naturally as today is Star Wars day check out this great video of one of our Shedders making something we think even the first order would relish!
We are encouraging UK Sheds to join in the effort to tackle loneliness in the UK. The All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Loneliness is running a major independent inquiry into loneliness. Since before social distancing and self-isolation one out of five people across the UK identifies as feeling often lonely.
