Southam Men’s Shed, based at Galanos House, opened its doors to welcome a Better Living, Better Drinking alcohol moderation session, delivered in partnership with DRINKiQ — Diageo’s responsible drinking platform.
The Better Drinking, Better Living workshops are for anyone who wants to mindfully moderate their own drinking, or feel more confident supporting others to do so. They include practical information — such as understanding alcohol units and strengths — alongside simple tips for having open, supportive conversations if the topic comes up. The sessions have been shaped with input from members of the UKMSA Health and Wellbeing Group and are delivered both online and in person.
Like all of these sessions, it was relaxed, friendly, and very much led by the people in the room. There was plenty of sharing, a few laughs, and some really honest conversations about alcohol, changing routines, and the small habits that can creep in over time.
Importantly, the sessions aren’t about being told what to do. They’re about hearing how others think about their drinking, picking up a few useful tools, and taking away ideas that feel doable — whether that’s sleeping a bit better, feeling clearer in the mornings, or just having more energy for the things you enjoy. Attendees also had the chance to try a range of non-alcoholic drinks, which sparked plenty of interest and discussion.
We know that older men are more likely than other groups to drink at levels that can affect health, but what really stands out is how naturally these conversations fit in a Shed. When people feel comfortable and supported it’s much easier to talk openly — and that’s where small changes can start.
Beth Rochford, DRINKiQ Ambassador reflects on what she’s been learning from being part of the sessions.
You’ve been part of the design and delivery of the Better Drinking, Better Living sessions. What are your key takeaways from people’s contributions?
“The Better Drinking, Better Living sessions have been super insightful. What stands out most is the openness and honesty Shedders bring to the conversation. These aren’t lectures — they’re shared exchanges where people reflect on their own habits, ask genuine questions about their relationship to alcohol and how their life has changed as they’ve gotten older. It’s clear that many of the men we’ve connected with value the chance to talk openly about these topics in a supportive environment. Through understanding units, sharing moderation tips and hearing each other’s insights, these sessions have become about much more than information — they’ve become spaces for reflection, connection, and support.”
What would you say to any Sheds considering taking part but feeling unsure about it?
“If any Sheds are thinking, ‘Is this for us?’ — I’d say absolutely. These sessions aren’t about judgement, they’re about empowerment. They’re about equipping your Shed community with practical tools and language to think about alcohol moderation and to encourage open and supportive conversation. It’s about giving people the confidence to make informed, balanced choices. And the best part? It’s done in true Shed spirit — friendly, respectful, and rooted in shared experience.
What I’ve enjoyed most is the humanity of it all. Meeting Shedders across the country, hearing their stories, sharing laughs, and being part of something that’s both meaningful and joyful — that’s the heart of this partnership. Seeing how benches become conversation starters, how sessions spark thoughtful discussion, and how communities grow stronger through simple shared purpose is incredibly rewarding. This work reminds me why connection and community matters so much to all of us — not just for wellbeing, but for how we live fulfilling, connected lives together.”
While we were there, we also spotted the buddy bench built by Southam Shedders as part of Mission: Shoulder to Shoulder — another great example of how Sheds create spaces for shoulder to shoulder chats, whether that’s over a brew, at a workbench, or out in the community.
“We found this a very interesting talk particularly detailing quantities and strengths of various wines, spirits and beers.” Attendee Feedback
