Glenn Johnson – My Story
Hi folks, I’d like to share my story about how a Shed fixed me.
After leaving school in 1976, I spent my whole working life in IT, first at United Friendly Insurance and later in another long-term role. Outside work, I always enjoyed practical hobbies and creative interests — electronics, photography, sound engineering, shooting sports and DIY.
But after a change in management during my second job, work became extremely stressful. Constant pressure, fabricated disciplinary meetings and fear about supporting my family eventually had a huge impact on my mental health. I became seriously unwell and was later diagnosed with several mental health conditions. At my lowest point, I was placed on “suicide watch”.
My GP, counsellor, advocate and family were incredibly supportive during this time, but sitting at home staring at four walls wasn’t helping me recover. I knew I needed a reason to get out again.
That’s when I found Broadstairs Town Shed.
Although woodworking wasn’t something I’d really done before, I decided to give it a try. I remember feeling overwhelmed and anxious when I first visited, but the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere immediately felt different from the pressure and stress I’d experienced elsewhere.
As the weeks went by, my confidence slowly started to return. I discovered a real passion for woodworking, learnt new skills and began enjoying being around people again. The camaraderie, banter and sense of belonging became incredibly important to me. The Shed became like another family.
Over time, my wellbeing, self-esteem and confidence improved massively. I started helping others at the Shed too, which I found hugely rewarding. The laughter, conversations and shared experiences all played a part in helping me rebuild myself.
Alongside the Shed, I also joined another local wellbeing group where I discovered a love for playing the ukulele — something that eventually led to music sessions back at the Shed itself.
Looking back, I realised how much I needed spaces like this. Away from workplace pressure, deadlines and constant stress, the Shed gave me purpose, routine, friendship and creativity again.
People come to Sheds for many different reasons, but for me, the Shed genuinely helped change my life.
Sheds are paths to wellness — and it’s vital that those paths continue to flourish.
