By Caroline Crouch – Eltham Shed Chair

Prior to our current premises and new name, we were in a very precarious position. Receiving a notice to vacate the workshop which had been our home for many years was met with disbelief, frustration and upset. Many of our Shedders had built strong, lasting friendships during this time.

Today on the 9/9/2026 we celebrate our 1st Anniversary. One year to the day Caroline Ellis (UKMSA CEO) accompanied by Ian Francis (UKMSA London Development Officer) and Greenwich Mayor Linda Bird officially opened ‘Eltham Sheds’. Our new home, on Woodlands Farm Shooter’s Hill has energised everyone, with new hope and adventure, the positivity remains palpable.

Eltham Sheds became an independent ‘not for profit’ organisation, that functions entirely on a voluntary basis. To cover operational expenses and remain financially sustainable members contribute with a monthly subscription fee. The workshop provides social connections to the over 50’s, aimed at keeping members physically and mentally active through being creative with wood and other mediums.

In the early days a steering group was formed, swiftly followed by a committee of seven. A constitution, members handbook and bank account, were organised and supported by members. The key benefits for us becoming an independent organisation are no hierarchical framework, we could be more spontaneous, more creative we could ‘think outside the box’.

Independence has given us the freedom to trial new ideas, projects and partnerships. We can make decisions in response to local needs and opportunities. This has enabled us to develop stronger personal relationships not only with our members, but also the wider community.

We have had the opportunity to develop connections and friendships with many groups on the farm, from the trustees to the farm manager, to the volunteers who work on the farm, the Education Centre and Sitopia- an organic food and flower social enterprise based here.

We’ve also made lasting connections within the Royal Borough of Greenwich, in particular Councillor John Fahy. John has offered us invaluable support, both in terms of social value and contacts, recognising our achievements and awarding us with a Civic Community Award ‘Spirit of the borough’ celebrated at Civic Awards 2026 | Royal Borough of Greenwich

Woodlands Farm organise a number of events across the agricultural year, involving the local community, allowing fundraising opportunities for both the farm and ourselves. These events enable us to raise our profile, showcase and sell our work. ‘Lambing day’ in April and ‘Apple day’ in October encourages local food and crafts to a farmer’s market onsite. Whilst Christmas time offers a magical experience for local children.

We have been involved in replacing worn out signage, dilapidated snowmen and themed Christmas billboards for the event. We have also made a large sign to direct the general public to the site – and 2 large vegetable collection boxes to assist the farm with orders.

In turn the farm has benefited from some much-needed repairs and heavy construction of new barn doors. The Education Centre has seen a new Wendy house, a tractor and carriage for children to pop their heads through the cutouts for photos.

Bigger projects for the wider community include a large planter for Mottingham train station and 4 XL planters for a public conservatory in Avery Hill Greenwich. Bird tables/boxes and raised planters have been supplied to a nursing home, a school and a Community House. A new 3D logo has helped develop our Shed branding – raising awareness and credibility across the local community.

Steve Lyon’s- committee member, is keen to bring people together on the farm and has succeeded in doing this by holding monthly BBQ’s, these social events have given rise to new Shed friendships.

Shedders are kept up to date with new projects for the community and are encouraged to join in should they wish. Some members are keen to breathe fresh life into old objects, that have sentimental value to their owners. Everyone has a unique contribution to make.

I believe that there is a stronger sense of ownership by being independent. We are in charge of our destiny, forging ahead and making significant improvements to the farm and community alike. We have had a fantastic first year at the farm and hope to go from strength to strength to leave a worthwhile legacy.

What’s next? who knows, watch this space!
